The following is an extract from the
local newspaper from March1944.

Dundalk, March 26 - After being
overseas only six months, Sergt.
Charles Winters, is now repoted
missing, according to a message re-
ceived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
James Winters, Maxwell village,
norty of here.

A rear gunner, he was listed as
missing following a raid on enemy
targets March 19. Born 23 years
ago at Hatherton, Osprey township,
he learned the baking business in
the shop of W.G. Kennedy here.
He was later employed at North
Bay and other Ontario points. Be-
side his parents he has a wifr
and baby son residing at Elmwood,
an only brother, Cpl. Robert
Winters, is attached to the Cana-
dian Dental Corps and is stationed
at Preston.

HATHERTON
Local friend will be happy to
learn that the name of one of our
former Hatherton boys, Charlie
Winters, wi1l be engraved on the
War MemorIal inMildmay, Ont.
Charlie was born in Hatherton the
youngest son of Mr. And Mrs.
Jas. Winters, now living in Max-
well. He joined the R.C.A.F. at
the beginning of the 2nd World
War, and lost life, in a raid
over Germany. His wife and son
reside in Mildmay and they plac-
ed a wreath there in his memory
at the unvailing of the monument
last week. Hetherton residents
are proud to have the name of
Charlie Winters included in the
honour roll of supreme sacrifice.

 

Killed in Action 18 Mar 1944 aged 23.
